Bakersfield Blaze News Release
For nine innings, the offense for Bakersfield and Modesto were rather nonexistent.
Held to just one hit through nine, the Blaze scorched the Nuts for six runs in the 10th inning to win the game 6-2.
Bakersfield has now won 10 of its last 12 dating back to June 16th.
The Blaze couldn't muster any kind of offense against Tyler Chatwood or Jake McGee. Both pitchers were making rehab appearances for the Colorado Rockies and it showed. Chatwood pitched five innings of nearly flawless baseball as he surrendered just one hit, walking two batters, and striking out three. The only issue for Chatwood and the Nuts on this night was who they were working against.
Tyler Pike matched Chatwood zero for zero and then some on Thursday evening in front of 1,003 at John Thurman Field. Working primarily with his off-speed pitches, Pike eased his way through seven innings without being in any kind of trouble. The lefty lowered his ERA to 4.02 after scattering three hits, walking two, and striking out four batters. After 91 pitches, Pike gave way to Kody Kerski (W, 2-1) with the game still scoreless.
In the 10th inning with one out, Gus Craig blooped a Logan Cozart (L, 0-3) pitch into shallow center field. Wes Rogers made a diving attempt to make the catch, but was unable to pull it in as Craig took full advantage. With no hesitation, Craig stretching his single into a double before Joe DeCarlo came to the plate. DeCarlo smashed a hanging breaking ball into the left field corner for an RBI double giving the Blaze a 1-0 lead.
Similar to their effort in Game 3 against San Jose on Wednesday, Bakersfield sent 10 men to the plate during a 6-run outburst.
After a Justin Seager walk and a wild pitch, Aaron Barbosa smacked a Cozart fastball into centerfield to give the Blaze some breathing room at 3-0. Braden Bishop and Gianfranco Wawoe both singled in the frame and Jay Baum was the last batter to reach as he hit a double down the left field line. Six runs were scores in the inning off of Cozart, but all six hits were severe cuts to a Modesto team that had won three straight games coming into the series opener.
The Blaze are a season-high eight games over .500 this year as they sit two games in front of everyone else in the second half of the North Division. Game 2 is Friday evening in Modesto and David Gascon will have the call on TuneIn Radio along with BakersfieldBlaze.com.
