Mavs Stun Sixers, Remain Perfect against Inland Empire
Published on July 1, 2016 under California League (CalL1) News Release
Adelanto, CA- The High Desert Mavericks stunned the Inland Empire 66ers with three runs in the bottom of the ninth, the game-winning run coming home on a two-out bases loaded hit by pitch and defeat the Sixers 7-6 at Heritage field on Thursday. The loss dropped Inland Empire to 0-12 versus the Mavs in 2016. Inland Empire (28-50, 5-3) took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth when Zach Welz drilled a three-run homer of Mavs starter Collin Wiles. It was Welz' third dinger of the season. The Sixers added runs in the sixth on Zach Houchins' RBI single and another in the seventh on Hutton Moyer's sac fly.
The Sixers led 6-3 heading into the eight when Luke Tendler drilled his tenth homer of the season for the Mavericks (46-32, 3-5) to shave the lead to 6-4. The wheels fell off in the bottom of the ninth for the 66ers. After a quick out, Sixers' southpaw Kevin Grendell (0-2) gave up a solo shot to Jeremi Profar to make it 6-5. It was Profar's sixth homer of the year and his third against Inland Empire. Grendell then fanned the next batter but walked Scott Heineman and gave up a single on an 0-2 pitch to Tendler to put runners at the corners. The Mavs then sent Tendler on a steal attempt to second and catcher Taylor Ward's throw to second was cut off by second baseman David Fletcher who could not get a return throw to the plate off. Heineman scored on the double steal to tie the game. Grendell walked the next two men to load the bases. Inland Empire went to righty Jordan Piche to try and push the game to a tenth inning but he hit nine-hole hitter Michael DeLeon with the first pitch he saw to knock in the winning run.
Profar had four hits in the win for High Desert. Fletcher, Welz and Houchins each had two hits for the Sixers. Inland Empire scheduled starter Garrett Nuss was scratched moments before the game pressing Eric Alonzo into a spot start. He allowed one run over three innings. Cody Palmquist (2-0) was credited with the win for the Mavs.
The series continues Friday at 7:05 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com and 1570 AM KPRO.
