Six-Run First Pushes New Britain Past Thunder
August 27, 2012 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - New Britain scored six runs in the first inning to take command and were never seriously threatened as the Rock Cats topped the Trenton Thunder, 8-1, Monday night at Waterfront Park in front of 6,029 fans to prevent the Thunder from clinching a playoff berth. New Britain starter Luke French pitched a complete game three-hitter as Trenton (76-59) has now dropped eight of its last nine home games.
Reading defeated Binghamton 4-1 which moves the Phillies within 4.0 games of the Thunder for the Eastern Division lead with seven games remaining in the regular season. Trenton's magic number to clinch a playoff spot remains at one while its magic number to clinch the division is still four.
With two outs in the first, New Britain's Rene Tosoni collected a bases-loaded two-run single against Craig Heyer (2-5) to make the score 3-0. The next batter was Nate Hanson, who drilled a three-run home run over the left field fence to put the Rock Cats in front 6-0 before Trenton came to bat.
That was plenty of offense for French (3-1), who allowed only a fifth-inning home run to Kevin Mahoney and singles to Adonis Garcia in the fourth and Luke Murton in the seventh. French threw 103 pitches and struck out two in going the distance for the win, snapping an eight-game losing streak for New Britain in the process.
The teams continue the four-game series on Tuesday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. Trenton left-hander Vidal Nuno (8-5, 2.45) is expected to start against Rock Cats righty Steve Hirschfeld (8-8, 3.98). Limited tickets are available by contacting the Thunder box office at 609-394-3300 or online at www.trentonthunder.com. Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 6:45 pm.
