Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

READING, PA - The Binghamton Mets were baffled by Reading Phillies starter Trevor May, sending just two over the minimum to the plate in a 4-1 loss Monday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. May struck out nine while allowing two hits over eight innings to cut Binghamton's elimination number down to one.

Wilmer Flores provided Binghamton's only highlight in the first. He gave Binghamton a short-lived one-run lead and extended his hitting streak to eight games with a solo homer to left.

The R-Phils struck back in the first against Mark Cohoon. Cody Asche bounced a one-out single up the middle and scored two batters later when Jake Fox launched an RBI double to the right field gap. It was the first run allowed by Cohoon in the first inning in nine starts, dating back to July 6.

Reading grabbed the lead after loading the bases on two singles and a walk against Cohoon. Tug Hulett smacked a two-run double to left centerfield, giving the R-Phils a 3-1 advantage.

Darin Ruf continued his red-hot August in the fifth. The league-leader in home runs blasted his 36th of the season over the left field wall to lead off the inning. The blast, Ruf's 18th in August, gave Reading a three-run lead.

The lead was more than enough for May, who shut down the B-Mets after Flores' homer in the first. May allowed only one more hit over his next seven innings. The righty retired 21 of the final 23 B-Mets he faced over a season-best eight innings. Justin Friend struck out the side in order in the ninth to secure his league-leading 23rd save.

Cohoon (8-10) allowed double-digit hits for the second straight start. The lefty surrendered four runs on ten hits over five innings, his shortest outing since May 21. Edgar Ramirez supplied two perfect innings of relief and Brandon Moore tossed a shutout eighth. May (10-12) allowed two hits or fewer for the fourth time this season to earn the win.

The B-Mets (65-70) look to stay afloat Tuesday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Cory Mazzoni takes the mound against Ethan Martin. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
