LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets used 15 hits and three Portland Sea Dogs errors in a 5-3 win in ten innings yesterday afternoon at Hadlock Field. Wilfredo Tovar capped a four-hit day by driving in the game-winning run with a single to center in the top of the tenth. With the bases loaded in the tenth, Tovar dumped a single into shallow center, plating Juan Lagares from third. Dustin Martin scored from second after a throw from center fielder Shannon Wilkerson bounced off his leg and rolled into left field. Brad Holt made the two-run lead stand with a perfect tenth, earning his first save as a B-Met. Jeff Kaplan tossed two scoreless innings for his second win. Starter Greg Peavey allowed three runs over seven innings in the no-decision, retiring 14 of the final 16 batters he faced. Michael Olmsted allowed both runs in the tenth in his second loss.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Mark Cohoon (8-9, 3.48) makes his 22nd start of the season and third against the Reading Phillies. Cohoon earned the win in his last start, defeating the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on August 22. He allowed a season-high 11 hits, but stranded ten runners over seven innings. He surrendered just three runs and struck out seven. Cohoon is in search of his first win against the R-Phils this season. He has gone 0-2 with a 5.11 ERA and allowed a .271 batting average against Reading in two starts. Cohoon's only career win against the R-Phils came at FirstEnergy Stadium on August 29, 2010.
RHP Trevor May (9-12, 4.97) makes his 27th start of the season and first against the B-Mets. May suffered the loss in his last start against the Harrisburg Senators on August 22. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits while fanning a season-high nine over seven innings. The R-Phils offense provided just one run of offensive support in a 2-1 loss. Selected in the fourth round of the 2008 draft out of Kelso HS (WA), May is in his first year at Double-A. After winning his first five games, he has gone 4-12 with a 5.68 ERA. The righty has lost six of his last eight decisions.
SWINGING A HOT BAT: Wilmer Flores extended his hitting streak to seven games with another three-hit game yesterday, his eighth as a B-Met. He has hit safely in 14 of his last 15 games, a stretch that includes eight multiple-hit games. Since August 9, he has led the league hitting .459 (28-for-61) with eight doubles, two homers, eleven runs scored and seven RBI. He has raised his batting average 54 points in the process.
YOU'RE WELCOME: Reading outfielder Darin Ruf leads the league with 35 home runs, doubling his previous career-high (17). He is six homers shy of the Eastern League single season record. The Nebraska native has slugged 17 homers in August, with his first four of the month coming against the B-Mets during a four-game series at FirstEnergy Stadium from August 3-5.
SINGLES NIGHT: The B-Mets collected 14 singles yesterday, the most in any game this season. The B-Mets have racked up 14 singles or more just four times in the last four years, last doing it against the Harrisburg Senators on July 30, 2011.
FOUR-HIT DAY: Wilfredo Tovar's four-hit game yesterday was the tenth this season for any B-Met. Tovar is the only B-Met to do it twice. He went 4-for-4 with a double against the Erie SeaWolves on June 25.
AGAINST THE R-PHILS: The B-Mets have gone 3-6 against Reading Phillies this season, including a 2-4 mark at FirstEnergy Stadium. Binghamton has hit just .211 as a team in the previous nine meetings while the staff has compiled a 3.39 ERA.
STAYING ALIVE....MATHEMATICALLY: Binghamton remains six games out of a playoff spot with eight games left in the regular. Their elimination number remains at three.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their series against the second-place R-Phils tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. Pennsylvania native RHP Cory Mazzoni takes the ball against RHP Ethan Martin.
