Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves dropped the series opener on Monday night at Prince George's Stadium to the wild card leading Bowie Baysox 6-0.

Bowie jumped ahead in the last of the first inning against Erie starter Jared Gayhart. Jonathan Schoop singled with one out and came home on a two-out Robbie Widlansky double for a 1-0 lead.

In the second, Ronnie Welty belted a two-out, solo home run to straight away center for a 2-0 lead.

Bowie added to its lead in the fifth. Brian Ward led off with a single and was sacrificed to second on an Antoan Richardson bunt. With two outs, Widlansky singled home Ward for a 3-0 lead.

The Baysox put the game out of reach in the ninth against reliever Robbie Weinhardt. Weinhardt had not given up a run since July 21, but had a rough outing. Rhyne Hughes connected on a solo home run with one out for a 4-0 lead. Zelous Wheeler singled and Welty belted his second home run of the game for a 6-0 Bowie edge.

Baysox starter Tommy Hunter was the story of the game. Hunter was perfect through four innings before giving up a walk to Daniel Fields in the fifth. Hunter held a no-hitter until one-out in the sixth when Luis Sanz lifted a base hit to left.

Erie's only other hit came in the ninth inning with two outs as Niuman Romero laced a single into left field for his league-leading 151st hit. Romero is now three hits shy of tying Shawn Wooten for third all-time in SeaWolves history.

Gayhart (1-5) allowed three runs on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts in five innings of work.

Erie and Bowie play the second game of a four-game series on Tuesday night at Price George's Stadium at 7:05. RHP James Avery (10-11, 4.66 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Dylan Bundy (1-0, 3.18 ERA).
