Somerset Patriots News Release
Richmond, VA - The Somerset Patriots (59-34) hit six home runs en route to a double header sweep of the Richmond Flying Squirrels (47-46) on Thursday.
Somerset won the first game 7-1 and the second game 6-3, resulting in a season-high-tying six-game win streak for the Patriots.
Yankees top prospect Anthony Volpe (15) homered in both ends of the double header, which also included long balls from Austin Wells (3), Chad Bell (14), Rodolfo Duran (5) and Jeisson Rosario (6).
Included in Volpe's two home runs during the double header, he went deep on the first pitch of the second game, for his team-leading 15th homer of the season.
Austin Wells' homer in the first game served as his third straight game with a home run, the second time in his career that he's accomplished the feat. Wells also hit a double in the second game to extend his hit streak to 12 straight games, the longest of his career and tied for the longest of any Patriot this season (Volpe).
On the pitching end, relievers Steven Jennings and Aaron McGarity each picked up wins in relief for Somerset. The Patriots pitching staff only ceded four hits in each end of the double header.
For McGarity, the Richmond, VA native earned his first Double-A win in his hometown with 2.1 perfect innings in what was his Double-A debut.
Yankees No. 26 prospect Deivi Garcia was optioned to Somerset the morning of the double header and started for the Patriots in game one.
After being activated by the Yankees off the 7-day injured list and optioned from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to Double-A Somerset, Garcia struck out six batters in four shutout innings and retired the final 12 batters he faced in his first game action in over two months.
The 2022 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road on Friday with a 6:35 p.m. game versus the Richmond Flying Squirrels at The Diamond. Fans can catch all the action on FOX Sports New Jersey 93.5 FM | 1450 AM, the Flagship Station for Patriots Baseball.
