WEDNESDAY'S WIN - The Sea Dogs evened up the series at one apiece with a 9-4 win over the Yard Goats at Dunkin' Donuts park on Wednesday. The scoring opened in the top of the first inning with the Sea Dogs bringing in a run against Yard Goats starter Mitch Kilkenny. With one out, Ceddanne Rafaela reached on an infield single and stole second base. Major League rehabber Christian Arroyo came through with an RBI base hit to center, driving in Rafaela to take the lead 1-0. Hartford quickly responded in the bottom of the first with a run against Portland starter Brett Kennedy. Hunter Stovall collected a one-out single and stole second base. Michael Toglia grounded a base hit to left, bringing around Stovall to tie the game 1-1. After a scoreless top half, the Yard Goats took the lead in the bottom of the second with Kennedy still on the mound. Willie MacIver led off the inning with a double, putting himself in scoring position. Niko Decolati doubled to right, plating MacIver to take the lead 2-1. Daniel Montano singled one out later, bringing in Decolati, expanding the Yard Goats lead to 3-1. The Sea Dogs added three runs in the top of the third Christian Koss had an RBI single, a throwing error brought in the next run, and Stephen Scott drove in a run with a base hit, giving the Sea Dogs a 4-3 lead. Montono crushed a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game 4-4. Two more runs came in to score for the Sea Dogs in the top of the fifth. Izzy Wilson worked a one-out and stole second base. Tyler Dearden launched a two-run homer to right field, bringing in two runs to make it a 6-4 advantage for the Sea Dogs. Portland tacked on their final three runs in the top of the sixth, using a Koss RBI single, a Scott sacrifice fly, and a Nick Northcut homer to take a 9-4 lead. Kyle Hart and Ryan Fernandez combined for 4.0 hitless innings in relief, securing a 9-4 win.
ANOTHER BIG LEAGUER TAKES THE MOUND - Tonight LHP Rich Hill will take the mound for the Sea Dogs in a Major League rehab assignment. Hill is in his 21st professional season after originally signed by the Cubs as a 4th-round selection in the 2002 MLB Draft. He has made 324 Major League appearances (195 starts) with 11 franchises: Chicago Cubs (2005-08), Baltimore Orioles (2009), Boston Red Sox (2010-12, '15), Cleveland (2013), Los Angeles Angels (2014), New York Yankees (2014), Oakland A's (2016), Los Angeles Dodgers (2016-19), Minnesota Twins (2020), Tampa Bay Rays (2021), and New York Mets (2021). Hill joins Zack Greinke as the only pitcher to appear in at least 1 Major League game in each of the last 17 seasons (2005- 21).
MAJOR LEAGUE REHABBERS SO FAR THIS WEEK - INF Christian Arroyo was Portland's designated hitter last night while RHP Matt Barnes pitched one inning in relief on Tuesday night. Barnes came in for 1.0 scoreless inning of relief, allowing one hit and striking out two. Arroyo last night was 1-for-1 with a run, RBI and 2 walks. He also swiped one of the seven franchise-record-setting bases for the Sea Dogs. Both are scheduled to appear again tonight with Portland.
SEA DOGS STEAL FRANCHISE RECORD - Portland's lineup combined for seven stolen bases in Wednesday's win over the Yard Goats, marking a franchise record. It broke the previous record of six steals that was set on July 22, 2012, in New Hampshire. Ceddanne Rafaela and Christian Koss both swiped two bags, while Christian Arroyo, David Hamilton, and Izzy Wilson stole one, combining for the franchise record of seven steals.
COTTAM EXTENDS STREAK - After pinch-hitting and finishing the night with a 1-for-2 line, Kole Cottam extended his hitting streak to eight games. The streak started for Cottam on July 14 at Hadlock Field against Somerset. Since, he has accumulated a .433 batting average (13-for-30), with three doubles, two triples, eight RBI, and two walks to four strikeouts.
BACK IN THE LEAD - The Sea Dogs and Yard Goats have already traded places once this week, but with Wednesday's victory, Portland is back in the top spot in Northeast Division. Hartford has mounted an 8-2 record over their last 10 games, closing in on the Sea Dogs. Portland has gone 4-6 over their last 10, putting them just a half-game in front of Hartford. The teams have one remaining series against each other, taking place at Hadlock Field starting on August 23.
PITCHING MATCHUP - Following LHP Rich Hill, RHP Victor Santos takes the mound for the third game against the Yard Goats this week. He last pitched against the Somerset Patriots on July 12, before the break. In that game Santos tossed 3.0 innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits, striking out two, and walking one. Santos has started two games against the Yard Goats this season, most recently on June 11. He worked through 5.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned), on five hits with a season-high eight strikeouts. His first start against Hartford on May 14 also went 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
