Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, could not overcome a five-run second inning from the Frederick Keys, falling 6-4 on Friday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Jorge Alfaro clubbed his second home run, but the Birds went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the contest.

Luis Parra, the Pelicans starter, put forth his shortest outing as a starter of the season due in large part to a big second inning. The Keys sent nine men to the plate in the second, scoring five runs on six hits, including a homer from Creede Simpson. They led 5-0 after the second.

The Pelicans (16-10) clawed their way back but could not tie it. They scored an unearned marker in the third inning on an RBI single from Preston Beck. The Keys starter Branden Kline scattered seven other baserunners in the first five innings. Down 5-1 in the sixth, Joey Gallo led off with a single against Kline. He stole second and was brought around by Alfaro to cut the lead to 5-2.

The Keys scored an unearned run off of Sam Stafford in the seventh. With two outs, Stafford walked two and allowed a single to Hutter, scoring Adrian Marin who had reached third base on a throwing error from Alfaro.

Christopher Bostick doubled home Odubel Herrera in the bottom of the seventh. The two-bagger cut the deficit to 6-3.

The Birds drew to within two runs with a leadoff homer from Alfaro to start the eighth inning, coming off of reliever Miguel Chalas. It was Alfaro's second long ball and first hit at home this season. Nick Williams doubled after Alfaro, but the Pelicans could not bring him home.

Matt Hauser in his Baltimore organizational debut pitched a perfect ninth for the save. Parra (3-1) suffered his first defeat, while Kline (2-1) netted his second victory.

The Pelicans play game three of the series with the Keys on Saturday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Chi Chi Gonzalez (1-2, 3.62 ERA) gets the nod for the Pelicans against Frederick right-hander Parker Bridwell (0-3, 7.56 ERA).
