Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - Eight of the nine Carolina hitters who came to the plate on Thursday night at Five County Stadium reached base safely as the Mudcats erased an early 2-0 deficit en route to a 6-3 victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Carolina did all of its damage between the fourth and seventh innings and out-hit the Blue Crew, 12-7 overall on the night. The loss dropped Wilmington to a season-high tying four games below .500.
Wilmington starter Miguel Almonte seemed to be on his game early. The fifth-ranked prospect in the Royals' system, according to Baseball America, kept the Mudcats off the board over his first 3.2 innings, but a solo homer by Jerrud Sabourin with two down in the fourth jumpstarted the Carolina offense. The Mudcats would get two more runs in the fifth when their first four batters of the inning registered hits to put Carolina up 3-2.
After Wilmington tied the game in the top of the sixth, Carolina went back in front for good in the home-half of the frame. Anthony Gallas singled to start the inning and went to second on an Almonte (2-1) balk. Darryl Kennedy went to his bullpen and inserted righty Aroni Nina. With two down and Gallas at third, Wilmington catcher Cam Gallagher committed his first passed ball of the season, allowing the Carolina runner to trot home.
The Mudcats added two insurance runs an inning later. Nina put two men on with one out and again Kennedy went to his relief corps. Zeb Sneed entered the contest and promptly allowed a two-run double to Jeremy Lucas.
All of Wilmington's offense came courtesy of Hunter Dozier. The infielder went 3-for-4 with two singles, a homer and three RBIs. His solo shot in the first put Wilmington in front, 1-0, and his run-scoring single in the sixth tied the game at 3-3.
The Blue Rocks continue their seven-game road trip on Friday when they face the Mudcats again. Wilmington will send southpaw Jonathan Dziedzic (3-1, 1.64) to the mound, while Carolina will counter with righty Cole Sulser (0-2, 3.22). First pitch is slated for 7 p.m., and fans can listen to the broadcast on 89.7 WGLS-FM. The Blue Crew will return to Frawley Stadium on Thursday, May 8.
