WINSTON-SALEM DASH (9-15) vs. POTOMAC NATIONALS (14-9)
RHP Braulio Ortiz (0-2, 4.15 ERA) vs. RHP Ronald Pena (2-0, 6.43 ERA)
7 p.m. - BB&T Ballpark (Winston-Salem, N.C.)
TWO-RUN 7TH LEADS TO ONE-RUN WIN For the first time this season, Winston-Salem won a game when trailing after six innings. The Dash plated a pair in the seventh on Jason Coats' solo shot and Adam Heisler's RBI single to nip the Potomac Nationals 3-2 in the first of four Thursday at BB&T Ballpark. The seventh-inning rally helped Dash starter Tony Bucciferro collect his second win in as many tries against the P-Nats. The righty made one mistake--a two-run blast by Brandon Miller in the third--over seven strong innings.
P-NOT IN THIS HOUSE The Dash have dominated Potomac at BB&T Ballpark since the start of the 2012 season. In these 21 games, Winston-Salem boasts an 18-3 (.857) mark against the P-Nats at home, and 10 of those Dash victories have come by one or two runs. Winston-Salem won all 10 home meetings with the Nationals in 2012 before claiming seven of the 10 against Potomac a year ago. Since becoming the Dash in 2009, Winston-Salem has enjoyed more success against the Nationals than any other club (62-41, .602).
EATING UP INNINGS Bucciferro has recorded consecutive victories over Potomac. The former Michigan State Spartan worked through a career-high eight innings on April 23 at Pfitzner Stadium before Thursday's seven-inning gem. These two strong efforts against the P-Nats represent two-thirds of the Dash's seven-plus inning starts this year. Mike Recchia has the only other one, and it came against Salem on April 19. In these two outings against the Nationals, Bucciferro has surrendered just four runs on 13 hits.
A RARE MONTH Winston-Salem finished the month of April with an 8-15 record, the worst mark by the franchise since July of 2007 (9-17). In the Dash era (2009-present), Winston has posted a winning record in 17 of 26 months (omitting September), with eight losing months and one at .500.
COATING THE STAT SHEET Jason Coats continued his torrid stretch with a solo blast in the seventh inning of Thursday's narrow victory. Over his last three games, the Allen, Texas, native is 7-for-12 with two homers, seven RBIs and six runs scored. Before this scorching surge, Coats was hitting .260 with only one RBI, which had come on a single at Salem on April 10. Last year, Coats led Low-A Kannapolis and finished in a tie for second place in the South Atlantic League with 84 RBIs.
ANDERSON PLACED ON DISABLED LIST Dash infielder Tim Anderson, a first-round pick last June, was placed on the seven-day disabled list for the first time in his professional career, the White Sox announced Thursday. He hurt his left shoulder in Monday's 11-8 loss at Salem. The Tuscaloosa, Ala., native is hitting .250 (23-for-92) with one homer and six RBIs thus far in 2014. His four triples are tied for the most in the CL, while he shares fifth place on the circuit with 11 extra-base hits.
WHERE'S THE (G)LOVE? The Dash did commit one error on Thursday, which raises their season total to 44. Winston-Salem is third in the Minors in errors, trailing the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Low-A, San Diego) by 12 for the top spot. Winston does lead all of Minor League Baseball with 46 unearned runs.
DASH DOTS For the first time since April 21, Winston-Salem did not score the first run of the game Thursday night...Starter Braulio Ortiz threw well in his last start, which was against the P-Nats...He allowed just two runs on five hits over five frames, which matches his longest outing of the season... Dash outfielder Courtney Hawkins will serve the second game of his three-game suspension on Friday...The Southern Division went 4-0 against the Northern Division on Thursday...The Dash are anticipating a sellout crowd for Friday's game...The BB&T Ballpark record for single-game attendance is 7,576 (July 4, 2013).
