Salem RidgeYaks News Release
The Salem Sox are looking to beat Lynchburg for the 10th consecutive time in Friday night's tilt at City Stadium... First pitch at 6:05...
Two Much Fun: Salem improved to 9-3 in road games in 2014 with a 6-4 come-from-behind victory on Thursday night in Lynchburg. The Sox trailed 2-0 after three and 4-3 after six, but scored all six of their runs with two outs to take down the Hillcats for the fourth straight time this season and for the ninth straight game overall, dating back to last August. The Sox have now won 18 of their last 24 against the Hillcats. In three of the four meetings against Lynchburg this season, the Hillcats led after the first inning. In fact, the Sox have trailed after the first inning in nine different games in 2014. But the resilient Red Sox have gone 5-4 when trailing after the first.
Sizzling Sticks: With 84 runs in their last 12 games, the Salem Sox have averaged seven runs per contest since April 17, winning nine of the last 12 tilts. For the entire season, the Red Sox lead the league with 146 runs scored. The Sox are also tops in the circuit with 56 doubles, 15 triples, and 113 walks. In the latter category, the seven other teams have drawn between 61 and 86 free passes on the year, giving Salem a gargantuan edge in walks. Entering Friday night, there are 21 players in the league with at least 10 walks, and seven of those guys are on the Sox.
Top of the Class: With a bunt single on Thursday night, Matty Johnson was able to extend his current hitting streak to 12 games, the longest active hitting streak in the Carolina League as the new month begins. Since the streak began on April 17, Johnson is batting .327 (17-for-52) with seven walks. Johnson has been Salem's leadoff hitter in every game this season, giving him 25 games played on the season. Teammate Ryan Dent and Myrtle Beach's Joey Gallo are the only other players with 25 games played entering Friday's action.
April Anecdotes: For the sixth straight season, the Salem Red Sox completed April with a winning record! The Sox went 14-10 in April of 2014 after going 12-11 last year, 12-10 in 2012, 16-5 in 2011, 14-7 in 2010, and 11-10 in April of 2009. All together, since becoming a Red Sox affiliate, the Sox have gone 79-53, a .598 winning percentage in the first month of the season. The defending Carolina League Champs began 2014 with five consecutive wins, lost seven of their next eight, then won seven of the next eight before dropping two out of three against the Dash to finish the month on Monday.
Mookie the Machine: Rained out on Thursday in Portland, former Salem second-baseman Mookie Betts was denied the chance to extend his remarkable streak for a day. Betts has reached base in 22 straight games to begin the season for the Sea Dogs, and considering that he reached safely in the final 35 games of 2013 for the Salem Sox, including the playoffs, he has now recorded at least a hit or a walk in 57 consecutive games dating back to last August. In these 57 games between Salem and Portland, Betts is hitting .423 (93-for-220). In 22 games with the Sea Dogs, Betts is hitting .430 (40-for-93) with 15 extra-base hits, 11 walks, 10 steals, and only eight strikeouts. Betts has also helped the Sea Dogs win 15 of their first 23 games in the Eastern League.
