Sioux City Explorers News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-----A two-out base hit by Jake Taylor in the ninth inning gave Sioux Falls a 4-3 win over the Explorers Friday night. The single came off losing pitcher Nick Shumacher, who pitcher one of his better games of the season. Matter of fact, Schumacher had a no-hitter through four innings as the Explorers led 1-0 on a home run by Adrian Martinez, his third of the season. The Explorers added another run in the fifth inning on a RBI single by Peter Barrows to give the X's a 2-0 lead. However, in the bottom of the fifth inning Cesar Nicholas broke up the no-hit bid with a lead off double. Before Schumacher could get the final out in the fifth inning, Sioux Falls had taken a 3-2 lead. The contest stayed that way until the top of the ninth. With two outs and nobody on base, Peter Barrows doubled and then scored to tie the game at 3-3. That set up the bottom of the ninth when Nicholas started the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Christian Guerrero. Guerrero then took third on a wild pitch by Schumacher. After Trevor Lawhorn poped up to second base, Taylor single up the middle to drive in the winning run. Wally Backman, Jr. extended his hitting streak to 21 games, Ray Serrano extended his to 19 games and Mike Murphy's hitting streak is now 11 games. The second game of the series will be Saturday starting at 6:05 at Sioux Falls Stadium.
