Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

The Sioux Falls Pheasants squeaked out just two hits on Thursday, but the one of them was a milestone. Brandon Sing collected his 1,000th professional hit while the Pheasants were shut out 9-0 by the St. Paul Saints.

Sing slipped a chopper past the St. Paul defense in the ninth inning. It was Sing's 102nd hit this year. This is his sixth season with 100-plus hits.

Sing's career began in 1999 with Chicago Cubs organization. This is his 12th professional season. He rose to the highest ranks of the Cubs' minor league system before moving to independent baseball in 2008.

The landmark moment was the only positive one for the Pheasants, who were shut out for the first time this season. Saints starter Jason Godin (7-6) kept the Pheasants off-balance with eight innings of one-hit ball. He walked five and struck out five. Gus Milner eked the only hit off Godin with an infield hit that ricocheted off Godin's glove in the third inning.

The Saints took the lead right away on Ole Sheldon's two-run home run in the top of the first inning. A Tim Hutting error helped another run scored for Saints 3-0 lead.

Pheasants starter Ryan Shaver (7-2) made an early exit after four innings, allowed six runs - five earned - on seven hits. He walked six and struck out three.

The Pheasants maintained a hold on first-place in the second-half division race. They lead the Wichita Wingnuts by one-half game. The Pheasants have the best overall record in the American Association at 56-30.

Sioux Falls begins the final I-29 Series of the year against the Sioux City Explorers at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, August 20, in Sioux City. The game will be broadcast live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.

The Pheasants are members of the American Association, a 10-team independent professional baseball league playing its fifth season this summer. Individual and group ticket information is available by calling (605) 333-0179. Fans can also visit the Pheasants at www.sfpheasants.com.
