Saints Make Two Moves Before Deadline

ST. PAUL, MN (August 20, 2010) - The St. Paul Saints made two moves right before the trade deadline on Thursday night trading for El Paso Diablos second baseman Hector Bernal in exchange for cash and signing St. Thomas graduate, pitcher Brandon Stone.

The 24-year-old Bernal was an All-Star for the Diablos and is hitting .343 with four homers and 48 RBI in 78 games. In 312 at bats he has scored 48 runs, has 18 doubles, seven triples, with an on base percentage of .420 and a slugging percentage of .484. He currently leads the league in triples.

Bernal was a 14th round selection by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2006 June Amateur Draft. He played one season for the organization and split time between the Arizona League and Single-A West Virginia. In 2007 and 2008 he played for Yuma in the Golden League and had a career year in '08 hitting .334 with nine homers and 53 RBI in 78 games.

The 22-year-old Stone was a standout with the Tommies breaking the single season saves record in 2010 with eight. He was 0-2 with a 2.11 ERA in 14 games. In 21.1 innings pitched he walked 13 and struck out 22 and held opponents to a .195 average.

Last season Stone was just as impressive pitching 49.0 innings with a 2.39 ERA while striking out 48 and earning three saves. He pitched 7.0 scoreless innings of relief in May, 2009 to earn the win in a 3-2 NCAA championship game win over Wooster.

The Saints roster stands at the league maximum 23 players, 10 pitchers and 13 position players. Each team can carry a maximum of 23 players during the final 10 days of the season.
