
Simon and Buccaneers Capture Three "Best of Des Moines 2011" Awards

DES MOINES - The Des Moines Buccaneers took home top honors in three different categories in Cityview's Best of Des Moines 2011, which were handed out last night at Prairie Meadows. More than 6,000 votes were cast in a variety of categories including "Best Local Coach," "Best Local Sports Team" and "Best Indoor Sporting Event," which the Des Moines Buccaneers proudly took home last night.
Head Coach and General Manager Regg Simon beat out two Iowa State coaches, including Iowa State University Men's Basketball coach Fred Hoiberg for the "Best Local Coach".
The team as a whole defeated the Iowa Cubs and the Des Moines Derby Dames for "Best Local Sports Team", and beat out the Iowa Barnstormers and the Des Moines Derby Dames for "Best Indoor Sporting Event".
Buccaneer Arena was a runner up in the "Best Place to Watch a Sporting Event," losing out to Principal Park (home of the Iowa Cubs) and Wells Fargo Arena (home to the Iowa Barnstormers and Iowa Energy).

Best Local Coach
Regg Simon (Des Moines Buccaneers)
Here's a man who is truly deserving of such an award. Simon, a former Buccaneer defenseman, returned to coach the USHL team this season. Before arriving in Des Moines, Simon spent two seasons at his alma mater, the University of Alaska-Anchorage. Simon suited up for the Bucs from 1994-96 and helped the team win its first "triple-crown" in 1995 - a USHL Anderson Cup (best regular-season record), the Clark Cup (playoff championship) and the Gold Cup (junior hockey's national championship).

It's clear the Des Moines Buccaneers have a faithful following. The team has already earned the top spot in a number of categories, so why not add "Best Local Sports Team" to the mix In the highly-contested category, the Bucs beat out the Iowa Cubs and the high-rising Des Moines Derby Dames. The Des Moines Buccaneers know how to attract fans. Home to the Bucs of the United States Hockey League (USHL), the arena is jam-packed during the season to see some of the metro's best young hockey stars.
