Everett Silvertips News Release
Everett, Wash. - The Everett Silvertips defeated the Portland Winter Hawks 4-1 on Saturday night, October 13th, inside of Comcast Arena at the Everett Events Center. Dan Gendur scored twice and added an assist while Jonathan Harty supplied two assists of his own in front of the 6,193 fans on hand for the Western Hockey League match-up. The Silvertips improve their record to 4-5 (8 pts.) and take a 2-1 lead in their season series against Portland.
Following a scoreless first period in which Everett held a slight offensive advantage with a 12-7 lead in the shots-on-goal category, it was Portland getting on the board first with a Matt Schmermund goal at 5:10 of the second. It didn't take long though for the Silvertips to respond and they did so in a big way. Everett was the recipient of a lengthy 5-on-3 power play and they were able to capitalize on both halves of the advantage.
First, Zach Hamill was set-up by Harty for a one-timer which he delivered to perfection as the puck sailed through traffic and into the top of the net. Gendur received credit for the secondary assist on the goal which came at 9:06. Gendur then proceeded to add the first of his two goals to the score sheet just seconds later. A shot from the left point made its way through the five-hole of Portland goaltender Kurtis Mucha to give the Silvertips the lead at 9:54. Kyle Beach was scored with the primary assist while Harty was scored the secondary.
Everett then displayed its defensive prowess by not allowing a single shot-on-goal during a Portland 5-on-3 less than five-minutes following the two Silvertip goals. It was back to offense for the home team in the final 20-minutes which included Vitali Karamnov scoring his first career Western League goal. Beach's work in front of the Portland net created a loose puck situation allowing for Karamnov to swoop in, briefly control the puck, then flip it over Mucha and into the top of the net at 4:17.
It was briefly after that when Gendur rounded out his trio of points on the night when he received a centering pass from Karamnov that he buried behind Mucha at 7:42. Rookie Tyler Skauge was credited with the secondary assist which goes down as the second point of his career. The rest of the way it was up to Silvertips goaltender Leland Irving and the rest of the Everett defense to stand their ground which they did so successfully.
The Silvertips now focus their sights on the road as next weekend they travel into British Columbia for the first time this season. Next Friday night, October 19th, they're in Kelowna to face-off against the Rockets at 7:00 p.m. The following night, the Silvertips will be in Vancouver to take on the Giants with the game time also set for 7:00 p.m. Wednesday night, October 24th, will be the next time to catch home ice action at Comcast Arena at the Everett Events Center. The Saskatoon Blades will be in town for their only regular season match-up against the Silvertips with the game time scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
