Everett Silvertips News Release
Everett, Wash. - The Everett Silvertips defeated the Kamloops Blazers 3-2 in overtime on Friday night, October 12th, inside of Comcast Arena at the Everett Events Center. The 5,578 fans in attendance for the Western Hockey League match-up had to postpone their victory celebration until early into the extra five-minute period. The Silvertips record bumps up to 3-5 (6 pts.) and they take an early 1-0 lead in the four game season series against Kamloops
The home team changed the trend of their more recent games by getting on the scoreboard first. An early power play very quickly turned into a two man advantage for the Silvertips. Unsuccessful during the 5-on-3, they were able to convert on the 5-on-4 when Kyle Beach scored his sixth goal of the season at 3:06. A pass from Dan Gendur from the left point found its target on Beach's stick who was positioned at the bottom of the left circle. Beach then made his way toward the front of the crease and buried the puck behind Kamloops goaltender Justin Leclerc; Hamill received the secondary assist.
Special teams goals would continue on to be the theme of the game. Everett increased their lead at 7:53 of the second while on their sixth power play. Beach won a right circle, offensive zone face-off straight back to Gendur who proceeded to drift slightly toward the center point before letting loose with a shot that blew past Leclerc. The Blazers quickly responded, however, when they converted on the first half of a 5-on-3 power play less than three minutes later on a Travis Dunstall goal at 10:39.
Kamloops then spent the final 20-minutes of the game trying to finish their comeback. Everett goaltender Leland Irving played big to keep his team out front including a huge glove save midway through the period to stop a breakaway. The Blazers last hopes seemed to diminish when they took a penalty following Leclerc being pulled for the extra attacker. They were able to produce a last second rush up ice though and Brock Nixon made it count. His shot from just inside the Silvertips blue-line beat Irving and tied the score at 19:58.
However, the Silvertips were still on the power play to start overtime and it proved beneficial. Everett kept the puck on the Kamloops half of the ice and Hamill set off the celebration with a quick shot from the bottom of the right circle that beat Leclerc at 48-seconds. Jonathan Harty received credit for the primary assist with the secondary being scored to Beach.
The Silvertips will be right back on home ice tomorrow night inside Comcast Arena at the Everett Events Center. The game will mark the third meeting in the past nine nights against the Portland Winter Hawks. The season series is tied 1-1 with the puck scheduled to drop for game three at 7:05 p.m.
