Silvertips Take Game One In Overtime Thriller, 5-4

Everett, WA - The Everett Silvertips rallied in the third period scoring a late goal before defeating the Kelowna Rockets in overtime, 5-4. Everett had five different goal scorers including Byron Froese, Zack Dailey, Kellan Tochkin, Curtis Kulchar and Daniel Iwanski. Thomas Heemskerk stopped 30 of 34 to collect his second career WHL playoff victory. Shane Harper collected two assists Friday night. Everett leads the WHL Western Conference Quarter-Final best of seven series 1-0.

Froese scored Everett's first goal of the 2010 WHL playoffs at 16:54 of the first period. Capitalizing on a Dallas Jackson slashing call, Shane Harper found Froese alone in the slot before the Everett forward beat Kelowna goalie Adam Brown glove side with a hard wrist shot to give Everett a 1-0 lead. The Silvertips outshot the Rockets 17-8 after 20 minutes of play.

The Silvertips scored their second power play goal of the game with Dailey's first of the 2010 playoffs at 4:40. Harper attempted a wrap around that was stopped by a Kelowna stick in front. Harper and Dailey fought hard in front for the loose puck before Dailey found the back of the net for a 2-0 Silvertips lead. Kelowna cut Everett's lead to one at 12:39 after Antoine Corbin beat Heemskerk with a slap shot from the left point. The Rockets tied the game at 18:22 after Geordie Wudrick scored on a 1 on 1 opportunity. Wudrick went top-shelf, glove side to make the score 2-2 after two periods of play.

Everett regained the lead at 5:02 of the third period after Tochkin scored his second career WHL playoff goal. Froese shot the puck from the goal line that rebounded out to Tochkin in front before going five-hole past Brown for a 3-2 Everett lead. Kelowna tied the game on the power play at 8:42. Brett Bulmer collected a wide shot that rebounded off the end boards before finding the back of the net to tie the game 3-3. The Rockets took their first lead just 30 seconds after tying the game when Collin Bowman deflected a Colton Jobke slap shot from the point to give Kelowna a 4-3 lead. Kulchar tied the game for the Silvertips at 15:34. Kulchar scored his first career WHL playoff goal with a slap shot from the right point that beat Brown to make the score 4-4. The Silvertips killed off a late penalty to keep the game tied at the end of regulation and send the game into overtime.

Iwanski scored the game winning goal at 5:18 of overtime. Scott MacDonald made a chip from the neutral zone to Clayton Cumiskey who broke into the zone on a 2 on 1. Cumiskey made a beautiful pass to Iwanski in front of the net for the game winning goal.
