Silvertips Edged at Lethbridge 4-3

Everett Silvertips News Release

LETHBRIDGE, Alberta - Egor Babenko and Cory Millette each collected a pair of goals to help the Lethbridge Hurricanes hold off the Everett Silvertips, 4-3 before 2,767 fans at Enmax Centre on Wednesday night.

Lethbridge halted the Silvertips' three-game win streak, spoiling the first career start for Mario Petit, who had 25 saves. Devon Skoleski, Yan Khomenko (first career WHL goal) and Noah Juulsen each scored for the Silvertips, who nearly rallied out of a 4-2 hole in the third period. The Silvertips, facing the league's top power play and forced to proceed without captain Dawson Leedahl (a last-second scratch), killed both shorthanded situations against them.

Hurricanes netminder Jayden Sittler earned the win with 31 stops.

Skoleski opened the scoring at 10:31 of the first period, finishing a giveaway and quick two-on-one sequence with Graham Millar, blocker side on Sittler. The Silvertips carried the lead into their dressing room but were victimized by a trio of Hurricanes goals in the middle period, beginning with Millette's eighth goal of the season, a tap-in at the left post at 2:13 of the second period.

Babenko then snuck a sharp angled backhander over the right shoulder of Petit for a 2-1 lead at 8:04, but the Silvertips responded with Khomenko's first career goal. The rookie import forward made a beeline to the net and re-directed Remi Laurencelle's rocket centering pass from the right boards through the five hole of Sittler.

Babenko restored the Lethbridge lead, 3-2 with 1:13 remaining in the period, off the rush when he converted on a toe drag move into the slot. Then on an early third period power play, the Silvertips turned the puck over at the Lethbridge blueline and Millette finished a feed by Kord Pankiewicz at the right post, shorthanded for a 4-2 cushion at the 1:33 mark.

The Silvertips mounted one last comeback attempt starting with Juulsen hammering a one-timer from the blueline, set up by Lucas Skrumeda, for his third goal of the season with 4:01 remaining in regulation. The Silvertips then pulled Petit for a sixth attacker and hemmed Lethbridge in their own zone for over a minute, nearly missing on two bullets by Juulsen from the blueline.

Lethbridge hung on and recorded their seventh consecutive home win.
