Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings got back on the winning track Wednesday night, scoring a 6-2 victory over the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers at Westman Communications Group Place.
Rookie netminder Logan Thompson - the Manitoba Blue Cross 1st Star - turned aside 42 shots, including fifteen in the first and third periods, as the Wheat Kings moved back to within three points of the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division leading Prince Albert Raiders.
Many of Thompson's best saves came early and late in this game as the Tigers had several great chances in the opening period and then more in the third when they enjoyed three powerplays including a 5-on-3 and a five minute major when captain Macoy Erkamps was thrown from the game after a very questionable boarding penalty.
Veterans Reid Duke and Ivan Provorov scored once and set up two others each to pace the Wheat Kings, who wound up killing off all six Medicine Hat powerplays on the night.
Nolan Patrick and three local products - Duncan Campbell, Tanner Kaspick and Ty Lewis - rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who led 2-1 and 3-2 at the period breaks.
For Lewis, it was his first goal of his WHL career.
"Ty Lewis scored, but he's playing well. He's been playing well now for 3-4 games," says Brandon General Manager and Head Coach Kelly McCrimmon. "We've talked about him after the games here a couple of times and he's fit in nicely with Duke and Hawryluk."
"We had a power-play goal tonight so that was positive, there were some guys that scored tonight that haven't scored in a while so even that part of it is positive here as we move along.," McCrimmon went on to say during CKLQ's post game show with Bruce Luebke.
Chad Butcher and James Hamblin scored in a losing cause for the Tigers, who wound up outshooting Brandon 44-30 on the night.
The Wheat Kings 5-game home stand wraps up Friday night as the Regina Pats pay their first visit of the season to Brandon.
Tickets to the game - presented by Manitoba Public Insurance - are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
