October 18, 2008 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release
Daniel Bartek registered his first Silvertip hat trick, Kyle Beach added four assists, and eleven different Silvertips registered a point in a thrilling, come-from-behind 8-6 victory over the Kelowna Rockets. The fourteen combined goals were the most in Silvertips history as the 'Tips erased a two-goal deficit with four unanswered goals over the final eight minutes.
After falling behind 1-0 on a Jamie Benn goal just 7:24 into the game, Everett responded with three consecutive goals to take a 3-1 lead heading into the break. Shane Harper knocked a loose puck out of mid-air to tie the game before Kellan Tochkin and Bartek scored to complete the first period scoring.
Kelowna responded with two quick goals to tie the game, the first coming from Tyson Barrie and the second from Kyle St. Denis on a shorthanded penalty shot at 11:32.
With time ticking down in the second period and the score knotted at three, Tochkin fed a terrific pass up the middle to Tyler Maxwell, who fought off two Rocket defenders before backhanding a go-ahead goal past Kris Lazaruk at 18:46 to give Everett a 4-3 lead heading into the third.
Whatever momentum the Silvertips had evaporated immediately as Kelowna scored three times in the first half of the third period for a 6-4 lead. Barrie notched his second of the game on a power play at 0:53 before Benn added a power play tally at 3:44. Cody Almond increased the Rockets lead to two at 10:13 following a scrum in front of Silvertip netminder Shayne Barrie.
Trailing by two goals with just over eight minutes to play, Everett erupted for four goals to seal the victory. The first came on a terrific pass from Beach in which he faked a shot and offered a no-look saucer pass to a streaking Bartek in front of the net; the twenty year old native of the Czech Republic one-timed it past a helpless Lazaruk to bring Everett within one. Everett tied the game at the 16:28 mark when Kellan Tochkin's first attempt on the power play was denied; Byron Froese took the loose puck into the slot and ripped off a wrist shot that beat Lazaruk just under the crossbar. 54 seconds later, Bartek took a loose puck in just outside of the crease in front of Lazaruk and beat the Kelowna goalie to send Comcast Arena into delirium at 17:22. Everett sealed the game when Beach drove into the offensive zone with Lazaruk pulled; he deked around a Kelowna defender before passing the puck to Matthew Ius, who snapped the puck into the Rockets' net to complete the scoring at 18:48.
The fourteen goals scored between the two teams were the most combined goals in franchise history, surpassing the twelve combined goals in an 8-4 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds on February 16, 2008. The two goals scored thirteen seconds apart in the first period were just one second off the all-time record for two goals by Silvertips. Ondrej Fiala and Moises Gutierrez scored just twelve seconds apart in the first period of a 6-5 shootout victory at Vancouver on January 21, 2007.
Following the dramatic victory, the Silvertips return to Comcast Arena Saturday evening to host the Kamloops Blazers in a Western Hockey League contest beginning at 7:05 pm. Tickets are on sale now at the new everettsilvertips.com and at the Comcast Arena Box Office!
