Sidewinders Stave Off Late Rally, Beat Beavers 4-3

Tucson, AZ - Tucson remained in the playoff chase with a 4-3 win over the Portland Beavers on Tuesday. The Beavers stranded the potential winning run in the top of the ninth but RHP Brandon Medders nailed down the save for Tucson. RF Carlos Quentin started in right field on a rehab assignment. He went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and a strikeout.

The Sidewinders opened up the scoring early with two runs in the bottom of the first. LF Alex Romero got things started for Tucson. He doubled, advanced on a wild pitch and came home on a groundout to give the Sidewinders an early run. Tucson then loaded the bases with one out on a double, single and a walk. SS Matt Erickson hit a sac fly to center to bring home the second run.

Tucson added two more runs in the third. The Sidewinders led off the inning with three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. C Robby Hammock then singled in a run and Quentin came home on a fielder's choice to extend Tucson's lead to 4-0. 3B Ronnie Merrill Jr. was intentionally walked to load the bases with two out to face the pitcher slot. RHP Casey Daigle then grounded out to end the inning.

The Beavers got on the board with a two run shot off the bat of LF Paul McAnulty in the fourth. Portland then loaded the bases with two outs but Daigle managed to force a ground out to escape the jam.

Portland loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the eighth to threaten the Tucson lead. LHP Randy Choate got PH Luke Carlin to fly out and end the inning to preserve the Sidewinders' 4-2 lead.

Portland came within a run by plating CF Brady Clark on a 1B Brian Myrow single to left, but RHP Brandon Medders nailed down the save for Tucson.
