League Ruling Awards Victory To Iowa

Published on August 28, 2007 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Memphis Redbirds' August 18th 7-6 victory over the Iowa Cubs has been nullified as the result of the appearance of an ineligible Memphis player in that game, the Pacific Coast League announced today. The ruling awards victory to the Iowa club by virtue of forfeit.

Veteran Kelly Stinnett was placed on Major League Baseball's Restricted List on July 1st by the St. Louis Cardinals, parent organization for the Redbirds team. An August 18th transaction was submitted by the Cardinals to activate him for immediate service. Stinnett entered the contest in Des Moines as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning of the game. However, the transaction was not approved in advance of his participation and was later ruled to be impermissible by the PCL and MLB. Major League Rules state no player can be removed from the Restricted List after August 1st each year, except under special criteria that did not apply in this case.

Stinnett entered the game in the eighth inning while substituting for pinch-hitter Michael Ferris who had been announced to replace pitcher Andy Cavazos, promptly singling home a run in Memphis's two-run game-winning rally.

"While there were extenuating circumstances which had complicated the transaction approval, there is no latitude in the rule for participation by a player who has not been appropriately re-activated." stated PCL President Branch B. Rickey

As a result of the forfeit, by rule the Iowa Cubs are awarded a 9-0 victory, improving their record to 76-61 (.555 winning percentage). The Memphis club is dropped to 54-83 (.394).
