Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa. - Behind dominant work on the mound and consistent offense, Washington clinched a series victory over Gateway with a 5-0 win in a season-low 1:56 contest.
The Wild Things scored first in the bottom of the first inning on Wes Darvill's third homer as a Wild Thing, a two-run shot. This happened after spot starter Stephen Knapp worked a one-two-three first.
Knapp worked the first four innings of the game as the opener for Washington. He faced just one over the minimum, allowing one hit on 46 pitches, 33 of which were strikes. Justin Showalter came on and worked a scoreless fifth before the homestanding club added on.
In the fifth, Scotty Dubrule singled up the middle and was plated on Caleb McNeely's triple. The triple was McNeely's first extra-base hit as a pro and he notched his first RBI before scoring on a passed ball to make it 4-0. The Wild Things added a run in the seventh on an RBI double by Darvill.
Showalter ended up working the final five innings for his seventh win of the season. He struck out three, walked one and allowed three hits.
The shutout is Washington's fifth of the season.
Washington, with the win, has won three of four August games against the Grizzlies and has won back-to-back series openers overall. The Wild Things will have a chance to win the series tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. on Senior Slugger Program Wednesday presented by AARP Pennsylvania.
