Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (14-19) saw their three-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night as Zack Brown (2-0) and the Biloxi Shuckers (21-12) blanked Montgomery for the third time this season by a score of 3-0 at Riverwalk Stadium.
Brown had faced the Biscuits twice this season prior to Wednesday night, but the right-hander churned out his greatest of the three performances in his last one, hurling seven shutout innings and scattering just two hits, two walks, and two hit batsmen to go along with six strikeouts for his second win of the season.
J.D. Martin (1-5) was unlucky on the other side for the Biscuits, turning in a quality start, going six innings and allowing just three runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts, but the Biscuits could not supply the knuckleballer with any run support. Through seven Martin starts this season, the Biscuits are averaging just 2.5 runs per game.
The Shuckers, like the Biscuits, tallied just five hits, and won the game on a pair of sac flies and some audacious baserunning from Biloxi right fielder Clint Coulter. Jake Gatewood delivered a sac fly in the first, and Lucas Erceg another in the fifth.
Before the second sac fly, Coulter was on second in the fifth when Corey Ray drove a ball into the gap in right-center field. Biscuits center fielder Thomas Milone made a good play on the ball, hauling it in, and then Coulter tagged from second to third as Milone's throw came into second baseman Nick Solak. Coulter then rounded third, almost daring Solak to throw it from shallow center, and then took off for home, which prompted an errant throw from the second baseman that scored Coulter.
Nick Ramirez worked a scoreless eighth for the Shuckers after Brown, and closer Nate Griep earned his minor league-leading 12
th save in a scoreless ninth. Jordan Harrison, Colin Poche, and Mike Franco each worked a scoreless inning of relief for the Biscuits, who got a three-hit (all singles) game from Brandon Lowe in the defeat.
The Biscuits will try to bounce back and win their third-straight series on Thursday when Eduar Lopez (1-2) takes on Adrian Houser (0-0) on Nurses Appreciation Night featuring a T-Shirt giveaway presented by Shaw Technology.
The rest of the 10-game home stand will feature Family Faith Night with Faith Radio Pre-Game Concert & MAX Fireworks on Friday, May 11, Military Appreciation Night & MAX Fireworks on Saturday, May 12, and Rays Night featuring Tampa Bay Rays Mascot Appearance and Rays Baseball Giveaway on Sunday, May 13.
