Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - With the bases loaded in the bottom of 10th inning, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp center fielder Kyle Barrett drove in the winning run with an infield ground ball dropped by Tennessee Smokies second baseman Carlos Penalver, giving the home team a 3-2 win in front of 2,762 at Wednesday's Business Person Special presented by Yuengling at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The Jumbo Shrimp (13-19) nearly scored the first run in the bottom of the first inning against Tennessee right-hander Thomas Hatch. Second baseman Isan Diaz hit a leadoff double and tried to score on first baseman Eric Jagielo's one-out single, but a relay from center fielder Trey Martin to Penalver to catcher Erick Castillo retired Diaz.
The Smokies (17-15) took the lead int the top of the second inning against Jacksonville right-hander Kolton Mahoney. Three consecutive one-out singles by third baseman Jesse Hodges, Penalver and Castillo loaded the bases. Hatch put down a bunt that led to a forceout at home plate, but catcher Skyler Ewing's errant throw to first base scored Penalver. The 1-0 Tennessee lead lasted until the bottom of the fourth inning. Jacksonville right fielder John Norwood grounded a leadoff double down the third-base line, stole third base and scored on left fielder Cade Gotta's ground ball to Penalver.
After Mahoney went five innings, allowing the unearned run on four hits and no walks with one strikeout, left-hander James Buckelew began the sixth inning and allowed a one-out solo home run by Smokies first baseman Yasiel Balaguert to the right field bleachers. Ewing tied the game, 2-2, with a seventh-inning, two-out solo home run to the Budweiser Tiki Terrace off Hatch, who completed seven innings, allowing seven hits and one walk with nine strikeouts.
In a 2-2 tie, left-hander Jose Quijada held Tennessee hitless in the eighth and ninth innings. With a runner at second base to start the 10th inning, Jacksonville left-hander Jeff Kinley (2-0) escaped a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout and groundout. In the bottom of the inning against right-hander Jake Stinnett (0-2), Ewing went from second to third base on shortstop Chris Diaz's sacrifice. After intentional walks loaded the bases, Barrett provided his second walk-off RBI of the season.
