
Catcher Mitch Ghelfi Added to Shuckers Roster

MONTGOMERY, AL - A day after utility man Nick Franklin had his contracted selected by the Milwaukee Brewers, catcher Mitch Ghelfi has been promoted to the Shuckers roster from Advanced-A Carolina. Additionally, closer Corey Knebel concluded his rehab assignment with the Shuckers and returned to the Brewers.
Ghelfi, 25, joins the Shuckers after playing in seven games for the Carolina Mudcats this season, hitting .143 in 21 at-bats. The Elkhart, IN native didn't join the Mudcats until April 25. He split 2017 between Wisconsin and Carolina, slashing .254/.323/.373 in 36 games, hitting 9 doubles while driving in 14.
His breakout season came in 2016 when Ghelfi was named a Mid-Season All-Star in the Midwest League with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. He slashed .326/.387/.439, mashing 15 doubles and five home runs with 32 RBI in 73 games, earning him a late July promotion to Advanced-A Brevard County. He was named the Brewers Minor League Player of the Month for July 2016 after batting .436 with nine doubles, two home runs and 17 RBI.
A 28th-round selection in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft by the Brewers, Ghelfi played four years of baseball at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. While with the Panthers, Ghelfi was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team and the Perfect Game College Freshman All-American First Team in 2013.
In a separate move, Brewers All-Star closer Corey Knebel concluded his rehab assignment with Biloxi and returned to Milwaukee. In three appearances with Biloxi, Knebel hurled 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing just a single hit and issuing one walk while striking out four. He recorded a pair of holds, including a scoreless eighth inning on May 6 that helped the Shuckers complete a 6-5 victory over the Jumbo Shrimp and seal their first home sweep since 2016.
Biloxi continues a five-game series with the Montgomery Biscuits on Wednesday night at 6:35 PM. The Shuckers return to MGM Park on Saturday, May 12 at 6:35 PM, kicking off a 10-game homestand with another Super Saturday.
