GREENSBORO, NC - The BlueClaws benefitted from another strong performance by a starter Monday afternoon, as Lakewood beat Greensboro 7-2.

Colby Shreve (5-4) stifled the Grasshoppers (7-5, 39-43) offense, holding them to two runs (one earned) on five hits through seven innings.

The BlueClaws (9-2, 51-30) loaded the bases with no outs in the first against Greensboro starter Robert Morey, but managed just one run on a Jonathan Singleton sacrifice fly.

The Grasshoppers tied the game at one in the next half inning on an RBI single by Justin Bass, but the Claws jumped back ahead on the fourth thanks to some heads up baserunning by Singleton.

After reaching with a leadoff double, Singleton advanced to third on a wild pitch, narrowly beating the throw from catcher Carlos Paulino. Singleton then scored on another wild pitch to make it a 2-1 game.

After Stephen Batts led off the fifth with a double, Jonathan Villar brought him in on a base hit to push the lead to 3-1.

Greensboro cut their deficit to one on a sacrifice fly by Michael Pasek in the bottom of the fifth.

The run was one of two that were unearned for the Hoppers, but while the BlueClaws committed three errors they also turned four double plays. Catcher Sebastian Valle also threw out two runners trying to steal.

Leandro Castro led off an inning with a double for the third time in a row in the sixth, and came around to score on a Valle base knock to push the score to 4-2.

Lakewood pulled away with three in the ninth against Hoppers closer Alejandro Ramos. Anthony Hewitt and Alan Schoenberger walked, and with one out Jonathan Villar reached on an error to score one. Schoenberger came home on a wild pitch, and Villar was plated by an RBI single by Leandro Castro.

Castro went 4-for-5 on the day with two doubles, and his team-leading 54th RBI.

Curtis Peterson (3-8) went five innings out of the pen but took the loss. Ebelin Lugo worked out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth and shutdown Greensboro in the ninth for his third save.

Tuesday at 7:00 pm RHP Trevor May will make his 2010 BlueClaws debut against LHP Chad James (3-4, 4.09).
