Braves Steal Seesaw Game from Gnats, 6-5

SAVANNAH, GA - The Rome Braves scored twice in the top of the eighth to steal a seesaw game from the Savannah Sand Gnats 6-5 Monday night in front of a crowd of 2,382 at Savannah's Historic Grayson Stadium. It was the first win for Rome (6-6/36-45) in Savannah this year: the Gnats are now 8-1 against the Braves at home and 13-4 overall.
Rome scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to finish the game's scoring. Savannah reliever Marcos Tabata began the inning with a 5-4 lead that he put in immediate jeopardy by issuing a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Savannah closer Michael Powers retired the next two batters, but could not preserve the Gnats' one-run lead. With two outs, Braves' 2B Matt Weaver doubled into the left field corner to drive home the winning runs.
The Gnats (4-8/46-36) had three different leads, none larger than two runs. RF Cesar Puello looked like he might be the night's hero for Savannah. With the Gnats trailing 4-3, Puello batted with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. He singled cleanly into center field chasing home SS Wilfredo Tovar and DH Pedro Zapata to put Savannah ahead 5-4. Puello finished 3-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Gnats took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles from Tovar and Zapata. After Rome evened the game at 2-2 with two runs in the top of the third, 3B Jefry Marte's double in the bottom of the third chased home Puello to give Savannah a brief 3-2 advantage.
The Gnats and Braves play game three of their four-game set on Tuesday at 7:05 pm when RHP Collin McHugh (3-6, 3.48) for Savannah takes on RHP Caleb Brewer (2-1, 2.92) for Rome. The pre-game show begins on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com at 6:50.
