Short Named Carolina League Player of the Week
May 10, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Today Winston-Salem Dash outfielder Brandon Short was named the Carolina League's "Player of the Week" for the week of May 3 - May 9. Short became the second straight Dash player to receive the award, as outfielder Justin Greene won it last week.
Short hit .412 and notched three doubles, two home runs, six RBI, and nine runs scored during the week. He led the league in hits (14) and runs scored, while landing in the top five in batting average, home runs, slugging percentage (.676) and OPS (1.088).
Short had a 26-game hitting streak snapped on Sunday, when he went 0 for 4 in the series finale with the Salem Red Sox. The streak was the longest in professional baseball at any level this season and was the second longest in Winston-Salem baseball history. Only Thomas (Reid) Nichols' 30-game hit streak for the 1979 Winston-Salem Red Sox eclipsed Short's. The streak was also tied for the fifth longest in Carolina League history.
Over the course of the streak, Short hit .403 with ten doubles, one triple, three home runs, 25 RBI, and 20 runs scored. He averaged nearly two hits per game during the streak (50 hits in 26 games) and was proficient in extending his streak early in games. In 23 of the 26 games, Short collected at least one base hit in the first five innings, including his last 17 games before Sunday.
The honor is the first for Short, who was selected by the White Sox in the 28th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of St. John's River Community College in Palatka, Florida. He set a new career high for hits in one game when he went 5 for 6 in Saturday night's 16-13 win over the Red Sox. He collected hits in his first four at bats, scored three times, and drove in three runs on the night.
The Mechanicsville, Maryland native is among the Carolina League leaders in many categories. He is first in hits (53), at bats (141), and total bases (78), second in batting average (.376), tied for second in RBI (26) and extra-base hits (16), and fifth in runs scored (24).
The Dash starts a seven-game road trip tonight when the team plays the first of a four-game series with the Potomac Nationals. LHP Justin Edwards (3-2, 2.25) seeks his second straight win when he opposes Potomac RHP Marcos Frias (1-1, 4.73). First pitch is scheduled for 7:03 p.m. from Pfitzner Stadium.
The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Monday, May 17 when it opens a seven-game home stand against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and the Lynchburg Hillcats.
