Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA (MAY 10, 2010) - Justin Edwards threw seven masterful innings of shutout baseball as the Dash beat the Potomac Nationals 4-1 on Monday night at Pfitzner Stadium. Winston-Salem's seven-game road trip got off to a successful start as the Dash scored three times in the first inning take control early.

Brandon Short, fresh off his recently expired 26-game hitting streak, doubled to lead off the ballgame against Marcos Frias (1-2). Eduardo Escobar reached on a fielding error by second baseman Steve Lombardozzi, allowing Short to score and giving the Dash (21-10) a 1-0 lead.

Two batters later, Seth Loman blasted a two-run home run to deep right field to put Winston ahead 3-0.

It stayed that way until the fifth, when the Dash added to its advantage. Short led off the inning with another double and reached third on a sacrifice bunt. Jon Gilmore singled to score him, making it 4-0 Winston-Salem. Gilmore has driven in a run in each of the last four games and also has a ten-game hit streak.

While the Dash was scoring runs, Justin Edwards (4-2) was in complete control. The southpaw scattered four hits over seven innings, never allowing Potomac to truly threaten the Winston lead.

The Nationals (14-17) got on the scoreboard only after Edwards departed. In the eighth inning, Potomac loaded the bases with one out against Leroy Hunt. Joe McEwing then removed Hunt, replacing him with Gregory Infante. A wild pitch scored one run, but Infante got a lineout double play to the shortstop the end the inning and the threat.

Infante got another double play in the ninth inning to pick up his fifth save and preserve the 4-1 Dash win.

Frias was charged with the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits over four innings.

The Dash continues the four-game series on Tuesday night. RHP Nate Jones (3-1, 3.24) gets the nod against RHP Brad Peacock (1-3, 4.55). First pitch is scheduled for 7:03 p.m. Fans can tune into the live audio broadcast beginning at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
