Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA -- The Potomac Nationals fell 4-1 at the hands of the Winston-Salem Dash Monday night at Pfitzner Stadium. The Dash stay in front of the Carolina League Southern Division with a 21-10 record while the P-Nats fall to five games out of first in the Southern Division.
Boomer Whiting was 2-for-3 with a run after coming off the disabled list Monday. It was his first start since April 15.
Catcher Derek Norris also came off the DL Monday for his first appearance since April 18. The Nationals' No. 2 prospect was 0-for-4 as he begins to shake off the rust.
Potomac starter Marcos Frias struggled in the first inning of Monday's game allowing three runs, two of them earned, on three hits. Brandon Short hit a leadoff double, then scored as Eduardo Escobar reached on a fielding error by second baseman Steve Lombardozzi. With Escobar on first and one out, Seth Loman belted a two-run home run to right field.
Frias remained in the game for three more innings and held the Dash hitless for the remainder of his tenure. Jesse Estrada took over in the fifth and surrendered one earned run in two innings of work.
Potomac mounted a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning, but outstanding defense by Winston-Salem cut it short.
Whiting led off the eighth with a bunt single to the pitcher, Lombardozzi walked and both runners advanced on a throwing error as Norris flew out to left. Michael Burgess then walked to load the bases, and that was all for Dash starter Justin Edwards.
The left-hander held Potomac scoreless through seven innings and allowed only four hits in his fourth win of the season. Gregory Infante replaced Edwards with the bases loaded in the eighth, and surrendered the P-Nats only run on a wild pitch to Edgardo Baez.
Potomac and Winston-Salem face off for game two of the three-game series tomorrow at 7:03 p.m. at Pfitzner Stadium. Game Two will feature P-Nats righty Brad Peacock and Dash right-hander Nate Jones. Tuesday is KRAFT Singles Tuesday Night Tickets night, when fans can buy one ticket to get one free from KRAFT Singles. It's also Salute to Service Night, presented by Potomac Mills, when military, police, fire fighters and teachers get in FREE with ID.
