
Cats Rally Not Enough; Rocks Win Opener

Lynchburg rallied with a pair of runs in the ninth inning to tie the game but fell in 10 innings 6-5 at Wilmington. The Hillcats, who won in walk-off fashion three times in their past homestand, lose in walk-off fashion for the second time this season.
Lynchburg started the scoring early with a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Carlos Mendez doubled home Cody Puckett with two outs in the frame. The Hillcats added to their advantage in the second inning with another two-out RBI double to make it a 2-0 lead. This time it was Cody Puckett who drove-in the run.
Wilmington plated their first run in the bottom of the second to cut the Lynchburg lead in half. Jamar Walton singled home Anthony Seratelli to pull the Rocks within a run. The bottom of the third inning started with a solo home run by Rocks catcher Salvador Perez to tie the game at two a piece.
The Blue Ricks kept their momentum rolling in the fifth inning when Rey Navarro started the inning with a solo home run to give the Rocks the lead. They would plate another run in the inning to take a 4-2 lead through five innings. J.D. Alfaro doubled hom the second run in the inning.
In the eighth inning the Hillcats clawed back within a run at 4-3. Devin Mesoraco smacked a one out triple off the wall in center field and scored on the sacrifice fly by Alex Buchholz. Mesoraco had four hits on the night to match the most by a Hillcat this season. The Blue Rocks responded though with an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning to push their lead back to two at 5-3. Adrian Ortiz doubled to start the inning and scored on the sacrifice fly by Jamie Romak.
The Cats would put on their rally caps again though in the ninth inning as they would score two runs to tie the game at five. Josh Fellhauer brought in a run with a ground out and Puckett tied the game with a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the tenth inning though Wilmington would win in walk-off fashion with an RBI double by Eric Hosmer to give them the 6-5 win in extra innings.
The win went to Barry Bowden (1-1) for Wilmington (12-19) and Nick Christiani (0-1) took the loss for Lynchburg (14-17). Game two of the four-game series is on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. at Frawley Stadium. Right-hander Scott Carroll (0-2, 2.65) will get the nod for the Hillcats opposite righty Tim Melville (1-4, 10.48) for the Blue Rocks.
