
Shorebirds Win Fourth Straight with 11-3 Blowout

SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds won in lopsided fashion for the second straight night against the Lexington Legends. Delmarva (11-9, 44-44) cruised for their fourth straight win with an 11-3 blowout victory on Wednesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Lexington led early with DonAndre Clark manufacturing a run by himself. The leadoff man singled in the first inning, and then scored after stealing both second and third base, plus a throwing error.
Delmarva took advantage of back-to-back walks to start their half of the first inning. RBIs for Cam Kneeland and Yermin Mercedes pushed the Shorebirds in front, 2-1. Lexington tied the game with a solo home run by Chad Johnson off Dariel Delgado in the fourth inning.
The Shorebirds scored six unanswered runs to build an insurmountable lead. Steve Wilkerson skied a sacrifice fly for a 3-2 lead in the fourth. Wilkerson finished the night 2-for-2 with two walks and the go-ahead RBI. Kneeland lined an RBI single for a 4-2 lead after four innings.
T.J. Olesczuk drilled an RBI triple in the fifth inning, his 31st RBI in 31 games with Delmarva. Olesczuk finished a home run shy of the cycle on Wednesday. RBI doubles by Logan Uxa and Kneeland, plus an RBI single from Elier Leyva pushed the lead out to 8-2.
Yermin Mercedes demolished a two-run home run to cap a three-run seventh frame for an 11-3 final score line. Mercedes' home run was one of Delmarva's longest of the season at an estimated 456 feet.
Dariel Delgado pitched five innings in relief for the win, filling in nicely went starter Lucas Long departed after an abbreviated three-inning outing. Emilio Ogando settled for the loss for Lexington. The Shorebirds have now scored 29 runs in two games, outscoring the Legends by 20 runs.
The Shorebirds will go for a series sweep over Lexington on Thursday night. Right-hander Josh Walker (4-1, 3.13) takes the bump against Legends' right-hander Pedro Fernandez (4-1, 3.47). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
