ROME, Ga. -- The Charleston RiverDogs took an early five-run lead after the first two and a half innings Wednesday afternoon, and held on to defeat the Rome Braves 10-5 in the series opener at State Mutual Stadium.

Vince Conde led off the game for the RiverDogs (8-11 second half, 42-47 overall) by reaching first baseman Matt Tellor's error. Conde stole second and scored on a two-out single by Isaias Tejeda.

Rome (8-10, 39-49) tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first. Ozhaino Albies started the inning off with a single, stole second, and scored on Jordan Edgerton's RBI single.

After a scoreless second inning, Charleston sent all nine batters to the plate in the third and notched five two-out runs against Rome's starter Touki Toussaint (2-1). Jorge Mateo single, stole second and third, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher Tanner Murphy.

Bo Thompson kept the inning alive with a walk, and then Tejeda tripled in another run. Collin Slaybaugh made the score 4-1 with the first of three singles in a row.

Angel Aguilar followed with a base hit, and Austin Aune drove in Slaybaugh with a single of his own. With runners on the corners, Aune swiped second while Aguilar bolted for home and slid in safely for the fifth Charleston run of the inning.

Rome came right back with three runs in the bottom of the third and sent all nine batters to the plate as well. Omar Obregon and Bryan De La Rosa both hit RBI singles in the frame, and Albies scored on a wild pitch by Charleston's starter Rony Bautista.

Joseph Daris hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the RiverDogs' lead to 6-5. However, the Braves would not get any closer, as Andre Del Bosque (5-4) and Dillon McNamara shut them out for the remainder of the game. McNamara earned his sixth save of the season.

Charleston added four more runs of insurance in the top of the eighth. Alexander Palma provided the first highlight of the inning with a two-run single to center that scored Slaybaugh and Aguilar. After a Gordon walk, Conde hammered a double to drive in two more runs.

In total the RiverDogs scored their 10 runs on 10 hits. They swiped a season-high nine stolen bases, of which Mateo had four. Wednesday marked the fourth four-steal game of the season and of his career.
