PREVIEW: The Shorebirds plated two runs in the top of the tenth inning last night to defeat the Tourists, 6-5, to level the series at one game apiece heading into game three. The Shorebirds scored three of their six runs in the first inning and scored just one run between the second and ninth innings. David Walters picked up his first win of the season while Clay Schrader threw 3.1 scoreless innings of middle relief.

QUICK TO 17: The Shorebirds did not win their 17th game of the 2010 season until May 14 last season (game 34). The Shorebirds started the 2009 season 17-11.

SECOND IN THE LEAGUE: Kipp Schutz ranks second in the South Atlantic League with a .381 batting average. Bryce Massanari of Asheville leads the league with a .394 average. He also ranks tied for third in the league in hits (37) and tied for second in the league in RBIs (23). Schutz has six multi-hit games in the last seven games. His batting average has jumped from .348 to .381 since April 28.

SCHRADER DOMINATING: Clay Schrader has not allowed a run in nine consecutive innings over his last four outings. He tossed 3.1 scoreless innings last night against Asheville. Over his last nine innings, Schrader has allowed three hits, no runs and has fanned 18 batters. He is tied with Luis Noel for the staff lead with 26 strikeouts. The 21-year old ranks second amongst relievers in the South Atlantic League in strikeouts behind Juan Rodriguez of Greenville (32).

HORNBACK/LEONORA JOINS CLUB: Riley Hornback was added to the Shorebirds yesterday, taking the spot of Kieron Pope, who was placed on the DL. He was selected in the 12th round of the ‘10 draft out of San Jacinto JC. He played 20 games in Bluefield (.340) and 16 games with the GCL Orioles (.176) last season. Dudley Leonora was added to the club today to take the spot of Manny Machado. Leonora played for Bluefield and the GCL Orioles last season.

GOOD START FOR PLANETA: Mikey Planeta joined the Shorebirds on May 5. He missed the first 26 games of the year with a left quadriceps strain. He is 5-for-10 with two doubles in his first two games. Last year, Planeta hit .226 in 117 games for the Shorebirds.
