Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The Lakewood BlueClaws wish they could play the Charleston RiverDogs more often. Lakewood improved to 6-2 against Charleston so far in 2011 with their 5-1 win on Saturday. BlueClaws SP David Buchanan pitched a Complete Game allowing only 1 run and 6 hits while striking out 7 batters over 9 innings pitched. It was the first time since Carlos Manasterios went the distance aginst West Virginia on July 20, 2007 that a BlueClaws starter had thrown a 9-inning Complete Game. Buchanan improved to 4-1 and lowered his ERA to 1.77 on the year with his performance on Saturday.
Buchanan had 1-2-3 innings in 5 of the 9 innings of the ballgame. The only run Charleston scored came in the 2nd inning when Buchanan surrendered 2 singles to Charleston, and Rob Segedin scored from 3rd base with one out on Gary Sanchez's groundball to the 3B Geancarlo Mendez. The BlueClaws scored 1 run in the 2nd, 1 run in the 3rd, and 3 runs in the top of 9th en route to the victory. RF Anthony Hewitt smacked his 3rd Home Run of the year to lead off the 9th inning for Lakewood, and CF Miguel Alvarez chipped in with 2 hits including an RBI single to score 1B Jim Murphy for the games first run in the 2nd inning. The player of the nightt offensively for Lakewood however was C Torre Langley.
BlueClaws Manager Chris Truby gave Cameron Rupp the night off behind the plate, and insrted Langley into the starting lineup. It resulted in a pretty strange lineup on paper for Lakewood as the C Langley batted 2nd, but he certainly made his Manager look smart as Langley was 3-4 in the ballgame. He also called a fantastic game behind the plate in guiding the 21-year-old Buchanan en route to the Complete Game victory.
Lakewood leads the series 2-1, and the season series 6-2 after their win Saturday. On Sunday the BlueClaws will try to take the series from Charleston in the fourth and final game of the series. LHP Jesse Biddle will get the start for the BlueClaws as he is still looking for his first win of the year. RHP Zach Nuding will take the mound for the RiverDogs. First pitch of the season finale Sunday is scheduled for 5:05 pm in Charleston.
