Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Despite a strong start from Taylor Rogers, the West Virginia Power got an RBI groundout in the seventh inning - the difference maker for the Power in a 1-0 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets on Saturday night.
After Matt Curry doubled off Rogers to open the seventh, a one-out walk to Dan Grovatt put runners at the corners when Rogers threw a wild pitch on ball four. Gaspar Santiago came on to relieve Rogers and got a broken bat roller to second base. The GreenJackets got the lead runner at second, but couldn't turn the double play as Curry scored to put the Power up 1-0.
Rogers (1-4) fired 6.2 solid innings for the GreenJackets, allowing just a run on three hits while striking out five. The four walks he allowed stands as the biggest blemish on his pitching line. In his four losses, Rogers has had just four total runs of support from the GreenJackets offensively.
West Virginia's Zack Dodson kept the GreenJackets off the board through five innings on five hits and a walk while striking out five. The GreenJackets had one of two solid scoring chances in the fifth off Dodson when Bobby Haney singled with two outs. After Haney took second on a wild pitch, Carlos Willoughby singled to left with one of his three hits in the contest. Power left fielder Rogelio Noris fired a strike to the plate to cut down Haney, attempting to score from second, and keep the game scoreless.
In the eighth, the GreenJackets had two on with no one out on a Willoughby single and a hit batsman. Willoughby tried to tag from second and take third on Josh Mazzola's fly-out to medium-depth center field. Andy Vasquez fired a one-hopper to third to complete the double play as the GreenJackets came up short on a gamble for the tying run. Jason Townsend retired the side in order for West Virginia in the ninth, picking up his first save of the season.
Brooks Pounders (3-0) got the win in relief for West Virginia, firing three scoreless innings of relief. He allowed one hit, walked one batter, hit two and struck out four.
The GreenJackets send Mario Rodriguez (0-2, 5.33) to the mound on Sunday afternoon to try and earn their first series win of the year. The Power send 2010 first-rounder Jameson Taillon (0-0, 1.50) to the mound in only his third professional appearance. First pitch will come at 2:05 with the pregame action beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
Single-game and Season Tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
