Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Greensboro Grasshoppers edged the Hickory Crawdads, 5-4, in a back-and-forth ballgame before 5,849 fans at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro on Saturday night.
After RHP Jay Rogers and the Grasshoppers (15-13) escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first, the Greensboro bats struck for a run against Crawdads RHP Justin Grimm in the home half of the frame. With runners at second and third and no outs, DH Mark Canha cracked the scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly to center, putting Greensboro ahead, 1-0.
However, the Crawdads (19-9) loaded the bases again in the top of the second and were able to push one across this time. With the bases full and no outs, SS Jurickson Profar bounced into a double play that brought 1B Jhonny Gomez home, squaring the score at 1-1.
Greensboro, though, responded with a run in both the second and third innings, moving back in front, 3-1. A wild pitch brought in 1B Brian McConkey in the second, before LF Christian Yelich knocked in 3B Ryan Fisher with an RBI double for the run in the third.
Hickory came racing back to tie it up in the top of the sixth inning. Consecutive singles by 2B Odubel Herrera and 3B Christian Villanueva led off the frame. Both runners advanced on a ground out, before advancing further on a sacrifice fly by C Kellin Deglan that scored Herrera from third and moved Villanueva to third. LF Jonathan Roof promptly tied it with a two-out RBI double to left field, knotting it at 3-3.
The Grasshoppers quickly broke the momentary tie in the bottom of the sixth. LF Christian Yelich drew a lead off walk against Grimm and then took second on a ground out. One out later, 2B Noah Perio drove an RBI single to center field, plating Yelich to give the Grasshoppers the 4-3 lead.
Hickory again answered in the top of the seventh to tie it on an RBI grounder by Herrera, but Greensboro retook the lead on a sacrifice fly by Fisher to put the Grasshoppers back in front, 5-4, through seven.
Grasshoppers LHP Grant Dayton and RHP Michael Brady combined to escape a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, before RHP Sean Watson closed the game with a scoreless ninth, nailing down the 5-4 win for Greensboro.
RHP Adam Veres (W, 1-1) picks up the win for Greensboro, as Watson registers his eighth save of the season. RHP Andres Perez-Lobo (L, 0-1) was tagged with the loss for Hickory.
