CHARLESTON, S.C. - David Buchanan recorded a career-high seven strikeouts in a complete game gem to lead the Lakewood BlueClaws past the Charleston RiverDogs, 5-1, in South Atlantic League action Saturday night in front of a crowd of 4,385 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Lakewood upped its mark to 13-15 with the win, while Charleston dropped to 12-17 with the loss, its 10th in the last 13 games overall.

Buchanan (4-1) turned in 7.0 shutout frames versus the RiverDogs a week and a half ago in Lakewood, and the 2010 seventh round selection showcased his stuff and poise again in silencing a Charleston lineup fresh off a season-best 12-run effort.

RiverDogs' starter Kramer Sneed (1-4) struck out the side in the second, but the BlueClaws scratched out a run on two hits to get on the scoreboard first for the third consecutive night. Jim Murphy lined a double to the left corner leading off the frame, and came in touch the plate on a two-out RBI single by Miguel Alvarez.

Buchanan could not hold the lead in the last of the inning as Charleston evened the score, 1-1. Rob Segedin ripped a sharp grounder through the hole on the left side, and crossed from first to third when Eduardo Sosa bounced a single to right field. Gary Sanchez produced an RBI groundout to score Segedin, registering an RBI for the third straight game since moving to the number seven hole in the lineup.

The top of the Lakewood order snatched the lead right back in the top of the third. Alan Schoenberger and Torre Langley singled to place runners on the corners with nobody out for Geancarlo Mendez, who reached on an error to send in a run for the 2-1 advantage.

Sneed was on top of his game after allowing single runs in the second and third innings, setting down ten in a row before issuing a free pass with one out in the sixth.

Slade Heathcott reached on an infield single and moved into scoring position with nobody out as Charleston threatened to square the tally in the sixth. Buchanan regrouped, though, fanning Jose Mojica and Ramon Flores, and inducing a groundout from J.R. Murphy to maintain the lead.

Alvarez singled and stole second base as Lakewood forged a threat of its own in the top of the seventh. Much like Buchanan, Sneed quelled the rally, getting Schoenberger to line softly into a double play as Alvarez broke off second on contact.

Knocked around for eight runs in 3.1 innings during a loss at Lakewood on April 26, Sneed displayed his mettle to pen his best outing of the year. The 6-3 southpaw set career highs with 7.0 innings pitched and nine strikeouts, going head-to-head with Buchanan while scattering five hits and three walks.

Anthony Hewitt blasted his third home run of the year off Charleston reliever Danny Burawa to give Lakewood an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Hewitt jumped on the first offering of the inning, hammering a towering drive over the Palmetto trees beyond the left-centerfield wall.

Lakewood piled on with two more runs in the frame to give Buchanan a 5-1 cushion. Edgar Duran deflected a single off Burawa and into shallow centerfield to plate Zach Collier, and Torre Langley lined a single to the opposite field to send Domingo Santana scurrying home.

Buchanan hardly revealed any fatigue in the ninth, going through the middle of the RiverDogs' order 1-2-3, striking out Segedin on a breaking ball to end it.
