
Shorebirds Two-Hit Power in 3-2 Game One Win

Charleston, W.Va. - Three Delmarva Shorebirds (54-69, 19-34) pitchers combined to two-hit the West Virginia Power in a 3-2 win on Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park. David Baker earned his third win of the season by tossing a one-hitter over seven full innings. The Shorebirds have won six of their last seven series openers.
The Power jumped to an early lead aided by three walks from David Baker in the first inning. Andy Vasquez drew a one out walk. He reached third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Chase Lyles hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Mel Rojas Jr.
The Shorebirds responded in the second with a run. Jacob Julius was hit by a Jameson Taillon fastball with two outs. Riley Hornback followed with a single to put runners at first and second. Then, Garabez Rosa singled to left field to plate Julius.
In the seventh, the Shorebirds tied the game at 2-2. Mike Mooney beat out a leadoff single towards the right side of the infield. After two groundouts to second advanced Mooney to third, he scored on a single by Ty Kelly, his 99th RBI over two seasons with the Shorebirds.
The Shorebirds took their first lead of the night in the eighth inning. Julius set the table with a one out single. After stealing second, he scored on a grounder by Garabez Rosa that hit the leg of pitcher Zach Fuesser and deflected to an open area on the right side of the infield.
Tim Adleman, pitching for the first time since August 11, tossed a scoreless eighth inning.
David Walters entered in the ninth to earn his 29th save of the season. He is five saves away from breaking the single-season saves record owned by Derek Brown (1998).
Baker tossed seven shutout innings and allowed just one hit. The Power did not record a hit against Baker until the fifth inning. After the first inning, Baker faced the minimum over each of the next six innings.
Rosa, Mooney and Brenden Webb each had two hits for the Shorebirds, who outhit the Power 10-2.
The Shorebirds and Power play game two of the series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Jarret Martin is the scheduled for Delmarva.
