Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON - A five-run second for Augusta was too much to overcome for the RiverDogs, as Charleston lost its fourth straight in a 9-6 final decision in South Atlantic League action at Lake Olmstead Stadium Thursday night.
With the victory, Augusta has won 10 out 12 to improve to 30-21, 61-60 overall, while Charleston dipped to 22-31, 48-75 overall.
Charleston's defense turned out to be its own worst enemy in the second inning, committing three errors en route to five unearned Augusta tallies for a 5-0 lead with all runs coming after two outs. Chris Lofton hit a two-run single, while Ryan Lollis also drilled a two-RBI double off Nathan Forer to highlight the rally.
The offense, though, struck for three in the top of the third trimming the deficit to 5-3. Jose Toussen walked, Shane Brown doubled him to third, and both scored on Kevin Mahoney's two-run single. Kelvin De Leon brought Mahoney to the dish with a ringing RBI double.
Neither starter pitched past the third inning, as Forer (2-6) pitched just 2.0 stanzas, surrendering the five unearned runs on four hits, while Augusta's Gaspar Santiago gave up three runs on four hits in his 2.0 innings.
Augusta put up a run in the fifth against Charleston's Mike Recchia courtesy of Devin Harris' sacrifice fly inching the GreenJackets ahead by a 6-3 score.
Recchia threw a season-high 4.0 frames out of the Dogs bullpen, permitting only one run while also setting a season best with four strikeouts.
Shane Brown pulled the RiverDogs to within 6-4 in the seventh inning, dropping a two-out RBI single to right field.
In the bottom half, the GreenJackets loaded the bases against Charleston's Kelvin Perez, and Carlos Willoughby cleared them with a three-run triple to right-centerfield, expanding the margin to 9-4.
Charleston charged back in the eighth, plating two runs for a 9-6 count. Taylor Grote laced a RBI triple into the right-field corner and scored the second run on Kyle Higashioka's groundout.
Mario Rodriguez (7-5) threw 3.0 perfect relief innings with four strikeouts to earn the victory, while Jose Valdez tossed a flawless ninth to pick up his first save of the campaign.
Game two on Friday at 7:05 p.m. features Charleston right-hander Manny Barreda (4-2, 4.05 ERA) battling Augusta right-hander Shawn Sanford (9-8, 2.89 ERA), who leads the league in ERA and is tied for fifth in victories.
