Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds dug themselves a hole in Monday's series opener, and the Hickory Crawdads coasted to a 8-1 final. Delmarva (21-16, 54-51) fell back into a tie for second place in the Northern Division with the defeat.
Shorebirds' starter Brian Gonzalez looked great to start the night. With extra velocity on his fastball, Gonzalez zipped past the Crawdads in the opening three frames without allowing a hit.
Hickory got the snowball started with a leadoff double by Jose Cardona in the fourth. An error on a sacrifice bunt brought across the first run. Three unearned runs came home on an RBI single by Jose Trevino and a two-run knock for Xavier Turner.
After Gonzalez settled down for blanks in the fifth and sixth, Hickory did more damage against the Shorebirds' bullpen. Carlos Arroyo bounced an RBI single in the seventh, and three runs scored in the eighth for an 8-0 lead. Luke Tendler hooked an RBI double to right, while Jairo Beras and Turner collected RBIs.
Delmarva got on the board in the eighth, but it was far too late. After a walk to Ademar Rifaela, T.J. Olesczuk belted an RBI double to left-center. The Shorebirds could not produce any more offense despite only being outhit, seven to Hickory's nine.
Pedro Payano made his Crawdads' debut with six scoreless innings, while allowing just five hits and zero walks. Adam Dian collected a nine-out save for Hickory, while Gonzalez took a loss despite just one of his four runs allowed were earned.
The Shorebirds have won five consecutive home series, and they will now need wins in the next two nights for a sixth straight. Right-hander Matthew Grimes (7-6, 4.41) starts on Tuesday against Hickory right-hander Nick Gardewine (6-7, 4.22). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
