Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (August 3, 2015) - Intimidators outfielder Michael Suiter extended his career-best hitting streak to 13 games, but Kannapolis surrendered more than 20 runs for only the second time since at least 2005, falling to Asheville, 23-3, on Monday at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. Kannapolis (20-17 Second Half, 55-51) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end while dropping its eight game in nine tries against the Tourists.
Dom Nunez drove in five runs for Asheville, the most by an Intimidators opponent this season, going 3-6 with a double and a run scored, while Yonathan Daza went 5-7 with a triple and four runs scored to lead the Tourists at the plate. Eight of nine Tourists hit safely while all nine scored at least one run.
Asheville (22-14, 54-52) plated three in the second, six in the third, and one in the fourth to open a 10-0 lead. Nunez hit a bases-clearing double in the sixth for a 13-0 advantage.
Kannapolis plate all three of its runs in the seventh. Ryan Plourde's RBI-double scored John Ziznewski, and Suiter followed with a two-run single to extended his hitting streak in his fourth at-bat of the game. Suiter finished 2-5 with two RBI and a double.
The Tourists responded with a six-run eighth inning, capped by a Jairo Rosario grand slam, his third home run of the season, for a 19-3 lead. Asheville added four more in the top of the ninth, including a two-run home run by Roberto Ramos to bring the Tourists to their record-setting total of 23 runs.
Luis Martinez (4-10) took the loss, giving up seven runs on five hits over two innings. Martinez, who walked four and struck out one, combined with four Kannapolis relievers to walk a season-high-tying 12 batters on the night. Asheville's Sam Howard (7-8) earned the win, giving up three runs on seven hits in 6 and 1/3 innings.
Kannapolis has only given up 20 runs one other time since at least 2005, a 21-2 home loss to Asheville on August 29, 2006. Monday's 20-run defeat is the largest margin of defeat on record in Intimidators history.
The Intimidators continue this three-game series against the Tourists on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Zach Thompson (3-5, 5.63 ERA) takes the mound for Kannapolis against Asheville's All-Star LHP Helmis Rodriguez (7-5, 3.97 ERA).
