Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Hickory, NC- The Shorebirds jumped out to a 7-0 lead and hung on for the 8-5 win over the Crawdads, catapulting Delmarva to ten games over .500 for the first time this season. Joe Mahoney, in his first game since July 13, finished 3-4 with five runs batted in as the Birds pitching staff shut down Hickory over the first six innings in the victory.

With the bases loaded in the top of the first, Mahoney took a Bradley Clapp fastball into center field to give Delmarva a 2-0 lead and set the pace for the ballgame. When Tyler Henson's sacrifice fly plated Anthony Martinez a batter later, the Shorebirds led 3-0 and turned it over to their pitching staff.

Chris Salberg, making his third start of the season and his first since May 20, held the Crawdads scoreless over the first four innings. Although the young lefthander walked five batters, he only allowed two hits and did not let Hickory get on the scoreboard. Leading 4-0 heading to the seventh, the Shorebirds once again loaded the bases with nobody out. One run came home on Martinez' grounder and two more on Mahoney's second base hit of the ballgame. Up 7-0, Delmarva appeared to be cruising.

But the Crawdads finally broke through in the bottom half of the seventh, scoring for the first time this series on Erik Huber's eighth homer of the season, a two-run shot that made it 7-2. Following a few Shorebird fielding miscues, the ‘Dads added three more unearned runs off Aubrey Miller before Parker came on to retire the side.

Mahoney's third RBI single of the game gave the Birds an extra insurance run in the ninth, and Mick Mattaliano earned his 24th save of the year with a scoreless ninth to preserve Delmarva's 55th victory in their 100th game of the season.
