Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - For the third time this season Augusta starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner was named the Pitcher of the Week in the South Atlantic League. Bumgarner was named Pitcher of the Week in the SAL for the week of July 14-July 20.
Bumgarner earned his third award of the season by working seven dominating innings against the Hagerstown Suns on July 16 at Lake Olmstead Stadium in a 2-0 victory. The southpaw struck out a career high 11 batters while matching his career high for innings pitched in a game. Bumgarner allowed just four hits, all singles, and did not walk a batter.
"I always try to hit my spots consistently each start," Bumgarner said. "I work hard every day and run so I don't get tired and hit a wall with it being such a long season."
The Giants top pick and 10 overall in the 2007 draft, Bumgarner is in his first professional season. Bumgarner won consecutive Pitcher of the Week awards earlier in the year. The lefty received his first Pitcher of the Week award for the week ending June 15 then followed up again the next week ending June 22.
In those two starts Bumgarner worked seven innings in each game and struck out 10 batters for a combined line of 14 shutout innings and 20 strikeouts. Both starts came against the Asheville Tourists.
The Lenoir, NC native's 1.79 ERA is ranked third best among all Minor League pitchers at the full season level. Bumgarner leads the GreenJackets in wins (9) and strikeouts (104) and is second on the team in ERA.
One of three pitchers for Augusta named to the South Atlantic League Southern Division All-Star team, Bumgarner pitched in the 49th-Annual SAL All-Star Game which was played on Tuesday, June 17.
"I really don't go out thinking about winning awards or being named to All-Star teams," Bumgarner said. "I just go out everyday and try to get the job done the best I can."
This is the fourth time a GreenJackets player has been named as a Player of the Week in the SAL this season. First baseman Angel Villalona was named Offensive Player of the Week for May 12-18.
The GreenJackets are currently on the tail end of an eight game home stand with three games left against the Lake County Captains. Bumgarner is slated to make his next start on Tuesday, July 22 against the Captains with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The GreenJackets are celebrating their 20th Anniversary this season of baseball returning to Augusta. For information on tickets and all the promotions scheduled for this season call the GreenJackets at 706-922-WINS or visit www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
