Hagerstown Suns News Release

GREENVILLE, SC - The Hagerstown Suns (14-17) were defeated 5-2 by the Greenville Drive (14-17) thanks to a three-run home run by Drive left fielder David Mailman in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Erik Arnesen (6-4) allowed the home run by Mailman after coming on in relief of Terrence Engles in the sixth inning. Arnesen allowed five hits and three runs in three innings to take the loss after Engles limited the Drive to just three hits and two runs in five innings of work as the Suns starter.

Terumasa Matsuo started the game for the Drive and was very effective for five and two thirds innings. Matsuo struck out ten Hagerstown hitters while allowing just two unearned runs on three hits.

The Suns started the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. With two outs, center fielder Mark Gildea stroked a double down the right field line and scored when second baseman Valerio Heredia's ground ball to the left side was mishandled by the third baseman Michael Almanzar. Heredia reached second on an errant throw to the plate by shortstop Oscar Tejeda in an attempt to retire Gildea.

Heredia came in to score the second run for the Suns as Drive catcher Juan Apodaca launched a wild throw into left field as Heredia stole third base.

The Drive tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with two hits and a walk against Engles.

Kyle Fernandes (3-1) pitched well in relief for Greenville, allowing just one base runner in two and one third innings of work. Fernandes, who earned the win for the Drive, was lifted for closer Felix Ventura who faced the minimum in the ninth inning for his 13th save of the season.

Game three of the four game series between the two teams will be at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22nd at Fuolds Field in Greenville, SC.
