Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds won a wild shootout on Saturday night, holding off a ninth inning rally from Augusta. Despite four runs by the GreenJackets in their final at-bat, Delmarva locked it up when it counted for an 11-10 final score.
The high-octane affair kicked off in the first. Conor Bierfeldt launched a two-run homer, his first of the season for Delmarva. Aramis Garcia responded for Augusta with a bases-clearing double in the bottom half of the first. Shorebirds starter Brian Gonzalez settled down after the first, retiring ten batters in a row after the Garcia double.
The seesaw battle continued in the fifth inning. Delmarva scored twice to take a 4-3 lead on an RBI double by Alex Murphy. Augusta bounced back in front with three runs off Gonzalez in the fifth, ending the left-hander's night.
Down 6-4, the Shorebirds kept the offense going with seven unanswered runs. Jamill Moquete sliced an RBI double in the sixth to cut the GreenJackets' lead to a single tally. In the seventh, Delmarva rallied for a lead with four runs off reliever Connor Kaden. Murphy ripped the tying single, and Jomar Reyes followed with the go-ahead knock up the middle.
The Shorebirds built up a comfortable lead at 11-6 with two more in the eighth. Murphy punched an RBI single, finishing his night at 4-for-4 with three runs driven in and just a home run shy of the cycle.
Augusta nearly pulled off an incredible comeback in the ninth. With one out, the GreenJackets strung together five consecutive hits. Relaford and Harrison went back-to-back with RBI triples, and Jonah Arenado delivered an RBI single to bring the tying run to the plate.
Delmarva went to the bullpen, bringing on closer Donnie Hart with the lead cut to 11-9. Andrew Cain smoked an RBI single up the middle, putting the tying run aboard with one out. Hart then got a flyball out from Garcia, and struck out John Riley to sew up the victory.
Garrett Cortright took home the win for Delmarva, tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. Donnie Hart earned his league-best sixth save of the season. Kaden suffered the loss for Augusta, dropping his record to 2-3.
With the series even, Delmarva and Augusta will do battle in game three on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Matthew Grimes (1-0, 4.91) starts for the Shorebirds against southpaw Nick Gonzalez (0-0, 3.55) for the GreenJackets. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 pm at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
