Lexington Legends News Release
The Lexington Legends set season highs for runs and hits, and broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning on their way to a 12-3 victory over the Asheville Tourists Saturday night in Asheville. Brandon Downes hit two home runs and drove in four runs for the Legends, who bounced back after getting only two hits in the series opener Friday night, both in the ninth inning. Downes and Ryan O'Hearn each had three hits for the Legends. Wander Franco and Humberto Arteaga each had two runs batted in.
The Tourists were limited to three hits in the game, all against starter Pedro Fernandez (2-0), who picked up the win after working five and two-thirds innings. Torey DeShazier relieved Fernandez and finished the game, allowing no hits over three and one-third innings to get his first save of the season.
After Asheville scored a run in the first inning, the Legends went in front for good with two runs in the third. With one out, Carlos Garcia tripled and Corey Toups walked. Alfredo Escalera's single scored Garcia and moved Toups to second. O'Hearn followed with a base hit, scoring Toups with the go-ahead run.
Downes hit a two-run homer in the fourth to give the Legends a 4-1 lead.
In the fifth, Escalera led off with a base hit, and Elier Hernandez reached on an error by center fielder Wes Rogers. O'Hearn singled, loading the bases, and Franco followed with a double to left field, scoring two runs as O'Hearn moved to third. After James Lomangino relieved starter Sam Howard for Asheville, O'Hearn scored on a ground out by Arteaga. Downes followed with his second homer, another two-run shot, giving the Legends a 9-1 lead. Kyle Pollock singled and advanced to second on an error by right fielder Randy Reyes. Pollock went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Garcia's ground out.
Asheville scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Legends countered with a run in the sixth on Arteaga's RBI single. The Tourists added their final run in the bottom of the sixth, and the Legends scored one more in the eighth when Hernandez drove in Toups with a single for the final 12-3 margin.
Asheville starter Sam Howard (0-3) was the losing pitcher.
Each team has won one game in the series, which continues Sunday. Game time is 2:05 p.m. at McCormick Field in Asheville.
